Wat Tyler Oh no! I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy my ‘take’ on the play. The concept was formed with a view to unpacking the themes for a large group of literature students studying the play for the first time. The aim was to provoke a discussion about how the play might be staged. Perhaps my decision to bring Carol’s Group to the stage (I assume that’s the butchery you refer to?) was a little ham fisted. But there were reasons for that. 1. The shadowy group exert an influence over Carol. The singing and the music have a kind of hypnotic quality. 2. I felt somewhat duty-bound as a teacher to include other students, even though the play was requested by the English department and I probably could have got away with using just two actors. 3. The film (scripted and directed by Mamet himself) was not faithful to the play script and several scenes were inserted. Thank you for watching, though, and taking the time to comment. Carol was indeed good, as were they all. They were only 17 back then. Hard play to tackle for young actors as the dialogue is so sparsely written. That Carol did indeed keep it up and went on to study drama at university and has become an actor and teacher.
